5 handmade Cinco de Mayo outfits
Posted on April 24 2019
Cinco de Mayo fiestas are coming up soon with margaritas, sombreros and fake mustaches for everyone. Cinco de Mayo is the day when most Americans wear a Mexican outfit, ask for a Corona beer and show off their Mexican side (existent or nonexistent it doesn't matter, what matters is the multicultural party!) And hey, if you are a party lover like me, you are probably already planning what to wear and where to go, so, if you are looking for some Cinco de Mayo outfits you are in the right place.
But, before you drink your margaritas and put on your Mexican dress, do you know what Cinco de Mayo actually is, or why Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in the United States? Well, it’s not Mexican Independence Day (I’m sure you already know that) but it is when the Mexican Army won their victory against the French in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It is important to those in the States because it helped to stave off the French while the U.S. Union forces made advances. Today, Cinco de Mayo is much more popular in the United States than in Mexico. And while it’s nominally about honoring Mexican-American culture, let’s be honest – it’s Taco and Margarita Day as far as most people are concerned.
Now, after a little bit of culture let’s put our party hat on! What are you wearing? We suggest a Mexican outfit (a real, original and unique one), because yes, you can go and buy an Amazon costume but, hey! Let’s take it to another cultural, ethical, and conscious level.
